My child speaks a little Russian

Children will learn to communicate confidently in Russian in most everyday situations. They will be able to talk about themselves, their family, school, hobbies, and plans, as well as discuss health, weather, holidays, travel, and shopping. They will understand simple texts and conversations, ask questions, and keep a conversation going on familiar topics.

What your child will learn:

• Introduce themselves and talk about their life with confidence: share stories about family, friends, school, favorite activities, and future plans.
• Communicate comfortably in everyday situations: order food in a café, shop in a store, ask questions at the doctor’s office, and manage common situations while traveling.
• Describe the world around them: talk about the weather, daily routines, traditions and holidays, places, and events.
• Express emotions and ideas clearly: ask for help politely, give advice, and share their own opinions.

They will learn to use basic grammar in practice:

• Use past, present, and future tense forms correctly.
• Become familiar with the genitive and dative cases.
• Begin using common verbs of motion, such as идти / ходить and ехать / ездить.

They will learn to work with adapted texts:

• Read short stories.
• Understand the main storyline.
• Retell key events in their own words.
• Explore culture and learn more about traditions and holidays across the Russian-speaking world.

At this stage, children begin to speak more confidently and in greater detail. They learn to express their opinions, describe people and events, compare objects and ideas, and discuss family, school, holidays, travel, and life in different countries.

Vocabulary expands significantly, and speech becomes more natural as children learn new grammar structures and more advanced ways to take part in conversations.

What your child will learn:

• Describe people and events in detail: talk about personality, appearance, relationships, cities, countries, and professions.
• Compare and contrast: identify similarities and differences between ideas, objects, and cultural features of different countries.

Use grammar structures with confidence:

• Use the main case endings correctly in spontaneous speech.
• Expand their use of verbs of motion, including лететь / летать, плыть / плавать, and бежать / бегать.
• Choose the correct verb aspect depending on the context.

Read and analyze literature:

• Read longer adapted texts.
• Identify the main idea.
• Retell the content in their own words without memorizing it.

At this stage, children learn to use Russian confidently both in conversation and when reading more substantial texts. They will be able to describe events in detail, talk about their experiences and impressions, ask questions, and keep conversations going on a wide range of topics.

The course places particular emphasis on accurate, natural speech, vocabulary development, and exploring the cultures of different countries through Russian.

What your child will learn:

• Talk about their travel experiences.
• Discuss nature, art, traditions, and landmarks in different cities and countries.

Use Russian grammar with confidence:

• Use the Russian case system naturally and with increasing accuracy.
• Use adjective declensions correctly.
• Use verb tense and aspect forms accurately in conversation.

Read literature and non-fiction texts with understanding:

• Understand texts in detail.
• Answer comprehension questions.
• Give clear, well-structured retellings.
• Explore classic literature and cultural heritage through Konstantin Paustovsky’s “Hare’s Paws,” Roman Sef’s poem “I Made Wings and Flew,” as well as traditional Russian crafts and famous museums.

At this stage, children learn to discuss more complex topics with confidence, read adapted fiction and non-fiction texts, support their opinions with clear arguments, and use a wider range of grammar structures.
Russian increasingly becomes a language for learning as well as communication. Children learn to understand more complex texts, reason, compare, analyze information, and express themselves with much less reliance on memorized language patterns.

What your child will learn:
Discuss more complex academic and intellectual topics:

• Talk about scientific discoveries, historical events, natural phenomena, art, and literature.

Build clear arguments and draw conclusions:

• Defend their point of view with confidence, compare facts, and take part in discussions as an equal participant.

Use a wider range of language structures:

• Use more complex sentence structures, conjunctions, and adverbs.
• Use comparative and superlative adjective forms as well as different types of pronouns.
• Match and decline adjectives with nouns correctly.

Analyze texts in greater depth:

• Understand and retell adapted works of fiction and non-fiction articles.
• Read and discuss educational texts about the world around them.
• Read and explore the fairy tale “The Twelve Months.”
